Storyteller, storyteller, tell me a story.

“What kind of story do you want?”

“A scary story,” the child says.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah!”

“OK. There is a man on a train. And he is going south, south to San Diego county. And there is a monster on the train.”

“A monster?”

“A green monster. A dangerous monster that lives in the train conductor’s control room. And when he comes out, at night, weird lights shine in the windows. And he is a sad monster, lonely, because he has been on the train a long time. And there is a child on the train, too, a young boy like you. And he is sleeping next to his train window. And the child is dreaming a good dream. And the monster comes up to him and says: “Hey! Are you asleep?” And the child wakes up. And the child is scared to see the green monster with his ears so pointy, standing there in the aisle by his seat. “You woke me up!” says the child. “I’ve never seen anything like you before!” “I’m a monster!” says the green monster. “A monster? Really?” “I think so,” says the monster. “I’ve been on this train a long time.” “What’s your name?” asks the child. “I am Green Monster,” says the monster. “What’s your name?” “My name’s Jimmy,” says Jimmy. “Hi, Jimmy. Are you going south?” “Yes, to my mother’s house,” says Jimmy. “YOUR MOTHER’S HOUSE??” says the monster. “You’re scary,” says Jimmy. “Why are you so scary?” “I don’t know!” says monster, real sad. “Don’t be so scary,” says Jimmy. “I have to be,” says the monster. “I’m a monster, I’m supposed to be scary.” “Why?” asks Jimmy. And the monster growls, grrrrrrr. “I need to sleep,” says Jimmy. “I’m going to be at my mother’s house soon.” “I’m sorry,” says the monster. “I’ll go away.” “Come back later!” says Jimmy. And Jimmy goes to sleep.

“And the monster goes back to the train conductor’s control room and the train conductor stuffs him into his bin, and the monster howls. Owwww! And in his bin, Green Monster thinks about Jimmy. He’s never met a boy who wasn’t afraid of him before! And he feels happy and sad at the same time.

“And the train rumbles and makes a loud wowie-wowie-wowie, like a big scary siren. And in the bin, Green Monster doesn’t feel very good. And he howls and howls and howls, but no one can hear him!

“And the train rumbles and rumbles and rumbles. And it makes big scary noises all night long. And Jimmy dreams of a big scary man, a big scary man who says strange things. And the train rumbles and rumbles and rumbles through the night. And the train conductor comes out of his control room and shakes Jimmy awake. “Where’s your money?” asks the train conductor. Jimmy is startled awake. “I gave you my ticket!” says Jimmy. “I need more money!” says the train conductor. “Okay,” says Jimmy. “I have a quarter!” “GIVE IT TO ME!” says the train conductor.
